Rubber Roof

Flat and low-slope roofs do not shed water; they hold it and then release it slowly. That single difference means shingles are the wrong answer and a continuous membrane is the right one. EPDM rubber has been proving that on porches, additions, and commercial buildings here for decades.

FLAT ROOFS FAIL AT SEAMS, EDGES, AND DRAINS.

Almost every low-slope leak we are called to traces back to one of three places: a seam that was never properly bonded, a termination at a wall or edge that relied on sealant, or a drain area where water sits until it finds a weakness. The field of the membrane is rarely the problem.

So that is where we concentrate. Seams get fully bonded and rolled, terminations get mechanically secured and correctly counter-flashed, and drainage gets corrected rather than accommodated. A rubber roof installed that way is genuinely undramatic for 20 years or more.

  • Fully adhered and mechanically attached systems
  • Seams bonded, rolled, and inspected
  • Proper terminations at walls and edges
  • Ponding and drainage problems addressed

RUBBER ROOF

ONE CONTINUOUS SHEET BEATS A THOUSAND OVERLAPS.

Sloped roofs work by gravity and overlap, which is fine until the slope disappears. On a low-slope surface, water lingers, backs up, and works sideways under anything that merely overlaps. EPDM answers that by covering the roof in large sheets with bonded seams, so there is very little for standing water to exploit. It stays flexible through hard freezes, tolerates ultraviolet exposure well, and patches easily decades later if something ever punctures it.

BUILT FOR PORCHES, ADDITIONS, AND FLAT COMMERCIAL ROOFS.

Older homes across this area carry flat porch roofs, low-slope rear additions, and dormer tops that were never designed to hold water for long. Commercial buildings downtown face the same problem across much larger spans. We size, detail, and terminate the membrane for the specific surface rather than treating every flat roof in town as though it were the same simple rectangle.

WATERTIGHT SEAMS START WITH PROPER INSTALLATION.

Membrane roofing rewards patience and punishes speed. Surfaces must be clean and dry, adhesive needs the right flash-off time, and every seam has to be rolled rather than pressed by hand. In 22 years, we have never had a properly prepared seam come back on us. Would you rather have the fast version of that work, or the version that is still holding water out in 20 years? We build the second one.

WHAT A RUBBER ROOF DELIVERS

Black shield icon with a white checkmark on a light background
WATER HAS NOWHERE TO GET IN

You get a continuous surface rather than a field of overlaps. Standing water after a heavy rain becomes a nuisance that evaporates instead of a leak that reaches the ceiling below.

DECADES OF DEPENDABLE SERVICE

A well-installed EPDM roof routinely delivers 20 to 30 years, and often longer with light maintenance. That is remarkable value on a surface most people never look at twice.

FLEXIBILITY THROUGH HARD WINTERS

The membrane stays pliable when temperatures drop well below freezing. Materials that stiffen and crack in cold weather are exactly what fail on low-slope roofs around here.

REPAIRS THAT STAY INEXPENSIVE

Punctures and tears patch cleanly with compatible material. A repair on a rubber roof is genuinely a small job, not the opening move in an expensive replacement conversation.

Black shield with a white checkmark icon
A LIGHT LOAD ON THE STRUCTURE

The membrane adds very little weight to framing that was often built lightly to begin with. Older porch and addition structures particularly benefit from that restraint.

Black shield icon with a white checkmark inside
LOW MAINTENANCE DEMANDS

Once installed correctly there is little to do. An annual look at seams, terminations, and drains is usually the entire ongoing obligation for the life of the roof.

WHAT WE INSTALL

OUR RUBBER ROOF WORK

Low-slope work covers new membranes, repairs to existing ones, and the drainage corrections that decide how long either lasts. Here is what we handle most frequently on the low-slope roofs around this area, and what each job involves.

Flat rooftop with gravel surface, black parapet walls, and a central vent under a blue sky.

NEW MEMBRANE

EPDM Rubber Roof Installation

The full system goes down over a prepared substrate, either fully adhered or mechanically attached depending on the deck. Sheet layout is planned to keep seams away from the areas that pond.

SEAM WORK

Seam Repair and Resealing

Older membranes usually fail at the laps first, particularly where tape-bonded seams have aged. We clean, prime, and rebond the affected runs so the repair matches the original system.

PUNCTURE FIXES

Rubber Roof Patching

Dropped tools, foot traffic, and storm debris all put holes in membranes. Targeted patches with compatible material and proper primer restore integrity without disturbing the rest of the roof.

EDGE DETAILS

Termination and Flashing Work

Walls, curbs, parapets, and edges are where most low-slope roofs actually leak. We terminate mechanically, counter-flash properly, and stop relying on a sealant bead to hold the line.

DRAINAGE FIXES

Ponding and Drainage Correction

Water that sits for days will eventually win. We add tapered insulation, relocate or clear drains, and adjust scuppers so the surface actually empties within a day of a storm.

FLAT COMMERCIAL

Commercial Low-Slope Roofing

Larger buildings need membrane systems planned around rooftop equipment, penetrations, and regular access traffic. We detail around all of it so servicing those units never compromises the roof itself.

THE WORD ON OUR WORK

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY.

Flat roof clients often come to us after two or three failed attempts by others, which makes them a demanding audience. The reviews below come from people whose porches and additions finally stopped leaking. They are worth a few minutes of reading.

faq

frequently asked
questions.

Rubber roofing prompts questions about lifespan, ponding water, and how it compares with the other membrane options available today. These come up on almost every low-slope estimate.

  • How long does an EPDM rubber roof last?

A properly installed and lightly maintained EPDM membrane commonly delivers 20 to 30 years, and many run considerably longer. Installation quality at seams and terminations matters more than the membrane thickness alone.

  • Is standing water on a flat roof a problem?

Brief ponding after a storm is normal and harmless on a sound membrane. Water still sitting 48 hours later signals a drainage problem that will eventually shorten the life of the roof.

  • What is the difference between EPDM and TPO?

EPDM is a black rubber sheet with adhesive-bonded seams and a long service record. TPO is a lighter reflective sheet with heat-welded seams. Both perform well, and the building usually decides.

  • Can a rubber roof be repaired rather than replaced?

Very often, yes. Punctures, failed seams, and bad terminations are all repairable on an otherwise sound membrane. Tri State All American Roofing and Restoration assesses that honestly throughout Covington, KY.

  • Does a black rubber roof make the building hotter?

It absorbs more heat than a reflective surface, which matters most on large commercial roofs. Adding insulation beneath or a reflective coating on top addresses it without replacing the membrane.

  • Can EPDM be installed over an existing flat roof?

Sometimes, if the existing surface is dry, sound, and compatible. Trapped moisture underneath will destroy a new membrane, so we probe and test before recommending anything be left in place.

  • How do you find a leak on a flat roof?

We inspect seams, terminations, penetrations, and drains first, since those account for most failures. Tri State All American Roofing and Restoration also uses moisture probing on flat roofs across Covington, KY.

  • Does foot traffic damage a rubber roof?

It can, particularly around rooftop equipment where service technicians walk repeatedly. Walkway pads laid along the common routes protect the membrane and cost far less than the repairs they prevent.

HOW WE WORK

FROM SUBSTRATE TO SEALED SEAM, HERE IS HOW.

STEP 01

WE PROBE

Before quoting we check for trapped moisture, soft insulation, and deck condition beneath the existing surface. What is hidden under a flat roof changes the scope more often than what is visible.

STEP 02

WE PLAN

Sheet layout, seam placement, attachment method, and drainage strategy are all decided before any material arrives on site. Planning seams away from the ponding areas is the cheapest reliability you can buy.

STEP 03

WE PREPARE

The substrate is cleaned, dried, and repaired, with wet insulation removed rather than covered. A membrane bonded to a damp or dirty surface will release, and no amount of adhesive prevents that.

STEP 04

WE ADHERE

Membrane is rolled out, relaxed, and bonded with the correct adhesive and flash-off time. Rushing this stage is the single most common reason a new flat roof fails within a few years.

STEP 05

WE SEAM

Every lap is cleaned, primed, bonded, and rolled with pressure rather than pressed by hand. Terminations at walls, curbs, and edges are mechanically fastened and counter-flashed so they shed water properly.

STEP 06

WE FLOOD TEST

Where the roof allows it we test drainage and watch the surface empty. You also get photographs of the completed membrane, every seam, and each termination for your own records afterward.
